Medical Director at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital Dr. Charles Woods, during a press conference held by the Ministry of Health earlier this week, discussed the changes that had to be made to the hospital’s wards in order to accommodate COVID-19 patients as well as the care that these patients receive when admitted.

“We have made adjustments to the ward to accommodate the influx of COVID-19 patients who would need isolation. We are using the female medical ward and paediatric ward now as COVID wards as well as the Argyle Isolation Facility. These three areas would have a capacity of about 65 beds that we have for COVID positive patients who need hospital care”. Dr. Woods said.

The Milton Cato Memorial Hospital’s Medical Director went on to speak on the treatment that COVID-19 patients receive once admitted.

“COVID-19 care is generally supportive; it’s basically a combination of steroids, antibiotics, oxygen. Ventilation is really a last resort and honestly has not really had much effect in the survival of most patients who eventually need to go on ventilation”. He said.

Dr. Woods emphasized that there is no cure for COVID-19 and that all treatment is just supportive. He said that it is safer to rely on prevention of the disease rather than treatment.
