Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has urged labour leaders not to “overreact” after they threatened to shut down the country over the government’s latest wage offer to public sector workers.

T&T’s Public sector trade unions Friday rejected a two per cent wage increase offered by the government of Trinidad and Tobago for their members, expressing disappointment and “downright disrespect” at the government’s attitude towards workers.

Trinidad andTobago’s Chief Personnel Officer (CPO) offered no increase for the period 2014-2017, one per cent for 2018, no further increase for the period 2019-2020, and one per cent for the 2021 negotiating period.

President of T&T’s Police Social and Welfare Association, Gideon Dickson, speaking on a television programme, said he was astonished by the government’s recommendation.

President of T&T’s Prison Officers Association, Ceron Richards, said the authorities should be treating wage negotiations as a serious business.
