Police said a corporal in the Defence Force is in custody in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl after she was allegedly beaten and then fell down a flight of stairs.
The deceased has been identified as Alliyah Kandic Alexander, a student of Couva West Secondary School.
According to police reports, around 3pm yesterday afternoon she had a confrontation with a male relative at her home in Claxton Bay.
During the confrontation, the man allegedly beat the 16-year-old repeatedly with a belt.
Officers were told that Alliyah tried to run away and allegedly fell down a flight of stairs, sustaining serious injuries.
The male relative notified the police and paramedics and took the injured teen to the Couva District Health Facility.
However, she succumbed to the injuries sustained.
