Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters due to an ongoing foot injury – with the US Open tennis tournament beginning in under three weeks.

Nadal pulled out of the Canadian Open on Tuesday due to the injury, which he picked up at the French Open in June.

The Spaniard, 35, missed Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in order to rest after the clay-court season.

He played in Washington on August 5th and 6th, but now says he will return to Mallorca to try and “be better again”.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion – an all-time record he shares with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – would be competing for a fifth US Open title should he be fit when the tournament begins on August 30th.
