The current rise in COVID-19 cases, which Guyana is experiencing is not something that health officials did not anticipate.

Within the last 24 hours, three new cases were detected to take active infections to 142.

“It is not unexpected because we have seen increases in cases in other countries. So while we would have had a good period where numbers were really low, we can expect with ridged testing that we will see cases,” Guyana’s Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said during today’s COVID-19 Update.

Anthony called on Guyanese to take precautions particularly the wearing of masks and other face coverings to prevent themselves from being infected.

Symptoms of the omicron variant can be mild in people who are vaccinated or healthy but Anthony urged Guyanese not to leave their potential encounter with COVID-19 up to chance.

He said vaccines are available for persons to either receive their primary doses or booster shots.
