Hairstyles such as locs, afros and cornrows will now be permitted under a new student hair policy in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The new student hair guidelines that were established to prevent any potential discrimination related to hair and hairstyles will come into effect from September 2023, Loop News reports.

The guidelines are aimed to help school leaders foster an inclusive educational environment while ensuring that students’ access to education is not limited.

This move in St. Kitts and Nevis follows the announcement by Jamaica’s Education Minister Fayval Williams that a draft of the long-awaited grooming policy for schools will be made available in time for the September 4 start of the new school year.

According to the Jamaica Gleaner the policy’s objective is to reduce discriminatory practices in schools that are based on students’ hairstyles and grooming practices while addressing the need for discipline at the school level and the development of wider-reaching societal values.
