Guyana has recorded its second case of Monkeypox.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony confirmed the patient’s diagnosis in his coronavirus (COVID-19) update on Monday.

“We have diagnosed a second person with monkeypox. That person is now at the Ocean View Hospital receiving treatment. The person is stable and we have started doing contact tracing for that person,” he said.

No further details on the patient were provided.

Guyana confirmed its first case of monkeypox last week.

The infected man was from Region Four and is in isolation at the Ocean View Hospital Infectious Diseases Hospital. It is unclear whether the man had travelled overseas or if he had picked up the virus locally.

The Guyanese government is encouraging persons not to panic as there are systems in place to prevent monkeypox from spreading.
