The Dominican police on Tuesday warned that no permission had been granted to anyone to stage any form of protest in the streets of the capital after a group calling itself “We the People” said it would be embarking on activities to mobilise the population on issues affecting the country.

“Let me inform the general public that the Chief of Police hasn’t received any request to hold the walk in the city of Roseau. The law makes provision as to how any walk, march or protest action can be held lawfully,” Dominica’s Police Commissioner Daniel Carbon said in a statement.

He said the police understood that the individuals, including opposition politicians, religious and civil society organisations, plan to stage the street marches “every Wednesday thereafter.

He said that the grouping is calling for the resignation of Dominica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, following the controversy over the diplomatic relations between Syria and Dominica.
