Professor Richard Robertson, Head of the La Soufriere Monitoring Team, during his recent appearance on NBC Radio’s Eying La Soufriere, continued to urge Vincentians not to venture up to the volcano’s summit.

Robertson disclosed that there had been forestry guides going up to the windward trail of the volcano, attempting to clear a path to the summit. He said that although the forestry team had made significant progress, it had to be noted that the conditions of the path were in quite a state.

“One of the concerns from their experience, and these are people who are in the field all the time, so they are accustomed to the bush, so to speak. The conditions of the path, particularly as you get higher up on the mountain; there are a lot of gully erosions, the rains have cut into the land really.” Professor Robertson said.

He then reiterated that the path on the windward end is not clear and may be near unrecognizable, even to someone who would have hiked up to the volcano prior to the eruptions of April 2021.

He cited this damage done to the path as well as the current presence of hot spots at the summit as reasons for his continuing urgings for persons not to venture up to the summit.

“Which is why again, I’ll urge people to stay away from going to the summit, not only because of the conditions in the crater itself that we spoke about but also the path is not so good.”
