Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared definitively that there will be no more lockdowns even as the country records astronomical increases in COVID-19 cases and the daily positivity rate.

“I have been very clear in Parliament – absolutely clear, gone overboard – to say we are not going back to lockdowns. So be calm,” asserted Holness during a press conference on Sunday, which was held to discuss primarily security matters.

In diverting away from issues of crime and the naming of Parade Gardens in Central Kingston as the latest Zone of Special Operation (ZOSO), Holness said the new strategy to combat the rising coronavirus cases is for persons who have not yet done so, to go and take the COVID-19 vaccines that are widely on offer locally.

“… And I have said what the strategy is; it is now in your hands. Go and take the vaccine; that is the strategy.

“We can’t hold you down and put the needle in your hand. If you get sick, you take the responsibility,” he stated.

“There is an option of vaccines all over the place. We have (vaccination) sites all over the place. I don’t hear one person say they can’t get the vaccine anywhere. Go and get vaccinated! Argument done!” declared the prime minister.

Jamaica continues to have record extremely high numbers of COVID-19 infections daily, with 1,499 recorded on Saturday, along with a positivity rate of 48.9 per cent.

This is the fourth day that the island has recorded over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases.
