A court has extended the detention of Moldova’s former Prime Minister Vlad Filat for 30 days as his possible role in a $1billion banking scam is investigated.
His liberal PLDM party – in Moldova’s ruling coalition – condemned the move as “purely political” and “a violation of his rights”, according to a BBC News report.
Mr. Filat was arrested on Thursday, suspected of involvement in the disappearance of $ 1 billion from three Moldovan banks. The scandal has thrown Moldova into economic and political chaos.
