Persons living with HIV/AIDS in Guyana have been urged to take the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines and booster shots.

An estimated 9,081 Guyanese are known to have the virus.

At today’s COVID-19 Update, Health Minister Dr Frank Antony confirmed that 6,681 HIV/AIDS patients are in the public health system receiving follow up care and of that figure just over 5,200 have received at least one vaccine jab.

“Here in Guyana, while I would say we have done relatively well with immunising our HIV patients, we can do better. Because at 78 per cent for the first dose, we still can take that up. We want to get that up to as much as 90 per cent,” Anthony said.

The minister noted that scientific data shows HIV/AIDS patients experience the same side effects of the vaccine to people without the virus.
