The first batch of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines through the COVAX facility, comprising a quantity of 24,000 doses, arrived in Guyana on Monday.
The COVAX facility is a global mechanism that was created to ensure the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. COVAX is made up of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI); Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi; the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); the World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders.
During the initial distribution phase from COVAX, Guyana is expected to receive a total of 100,800 doses of vaccine. PAHO/WHO Country Representative to Guyana, Dr. Luis Codina, at the handing over ceremony, noted that this first delivery will be complemented with the remaining doses expected between April and May.
