The Trinidad and Tobago government has agreed to pump $12 million into beefing up security in prisons, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage for all facilities, Minister of Justice and Minister of Legal Affairs Prakash Ramadhar announced on Thursday July 9th 2015.

Ramadhar said experts advising Government have indicated the sum is a good head start to outfitting all the country’s prisons, and added that he has seen video footage of the “ungodly” things that occur in prison and of the abuse officers are sometimes faced with in the execution of their duties.

A series of uprisings and clashes between prisoners and officers flared up this year, the most recent within the last few weeks.
