Professor Richard Robertson, while making his usual appearance on NBC’s Eying La Soufriere program, provided an update the activity of the volcano.

Robertson said that the pattern that is consistent with a period of unrest after a volcanic eruption continues. Saying that small earthquakes are still taking place, and that there are still sufficient amounts of gas present for to be measured.

According to Professor Robertson, the last measurement of gas saw 250 tonnes.

He goes on to talk about the hot spots that are still present on the volcano.

“As we have said before, there are still fairly hot areas close to the summit, so called hot spots, which are related to the fact that you had a volcano erupting, so then you have a lot more hot material close to the surface.” He said.

Professor Robertson said that the La Soufriere volcano is essentially shifting back down to being completely quiet. He said that a small chance exists that activity might rise again, however he does not believe that will happen immediately.

According to the Professor, the current main hazards associated with the volcano are the summit area and lahars.
