The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced it would deliver a ruling on Thursday on Venezuela’s preliminary objection in its border dispute case with Guyana.

President of the Court, Joan Donoghue, will read the ruling at 3 pm during a public sitting of the court which is housed at the Peace Palace in The Netherlands.

According to Loop News Venezuela’s preliminary objection in the case centres on their belief that the Court lacks jurisdiction to hear Guyana’s application for it to settle the border dispute since the United Kingdom is a necessary party to the proceedings.

Guyana filed the case in March 2018 asking that the court declare that: “The 1899 Award is valid and binding upon Guyana and Venezuela, and the boundary established by that Award and the 1905 Agreement is valid and binding upon Guyana and Venezuela.”

Venezuela had said it was not participating in the matter but it did take part in the case management process.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, during her appearance in court last year, said the country’s participation in the case management was “as a courtesy, not as a party in this procedure.”
