The United Nations with the support of other international and regional organisations has launched a global Appeal Fund to garner financial support for St Vincent and the Grenadines in the wake of a series of volcanic eruptions.

The launch of the global fund which took place on Tuesday April 20th is also expected to raise awareness of the impact of the explosive eruptions of La Soufriere on St. Vincent and the Grenadines and on neighbouring islands; and the need for a global relief effort.

At a press conference on Tuesday at Cabinet room, the United Nations resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean said that the United Nations can be counted on as well as regional organisations such as CDEMA for support.  Highlighting that fifteen percent of the population has been displaced the United Nations resident Coordinator added that two out of five hospitals have been affected placing more pressure on the health system here.  The coordinator stressed that this is a crisis within a Covid-19 crisis and fears the risk of a spike in Covid-19 cases.
