Eight new Championship Records were set over the weekend, when Team Athletics SVG held the 2023 Wendell Hercules National Championships, at the Sir Vincent Beache National Stadium.

Sprinter Kyle Lawrence, left 2 new meet records in the 100m and 200m. He won the 100m in 10.53s, which broke Devonric Mac’s 10.59s. He emerged double sprint champion when he won the 200m, also in a meet record time, of 21.28s, which eclipsed the standing record of 21.40 also set by Mac.

In the women’s 200m, Teia Laborde finished in the top spot, with a record time of 25.10s. The previous record belonged to Grenisha Thomas, of 25.26s. The other records set in the championship, came in the Field events.

High Jumper Verrol Sam, who set a national record of 2.09m at the 2023 SVGCC Championships, established a new meet record this past weekend of 2.06m, to break Calroy Hadaway’s 1.95m.

The record in the Javelin Throw of 48.76m by Kirk Hamlett, was broken by Cadique Stephens, with 54.85m. The men’s Shot Put meet record of 12.98m, also held by Kirk Hamlette, was obliterated by Hezekiel Romeo of Trinidad & Tobago. He finished at the top of the podium with a distance of 18.41m.

Jacintha Ballantyne Samayaa Connell broke her own women’s Shot Put record of 9.53m, taking the mark to 9.62m, and Gail-Ann John set a new Women’s Triple Jump record of 10.14m, which broke Amaia Edwards’ 9.55m. Clubs here in SVG will now be turning their sights on Grenada, for the 2023 Whitsun Tide Games, at the end of May.
