The death toll from the heavy fighting between Hamas fighters and Israel has risen to 1300.

More than 800 Israelis and some 500 Palestinians have been killed in the midst of the fighting, Al Jazeera reports.

Gaza’s ruling Hamas militant group launched an unprecedented attack on Israel at daybreak Saturday, firing thousands of rockets as hundreds of Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea, catching the country off guard on a major holiday, Simchat Torah, a normally joyous day when Jews complete the annual cycle of reading the Torah scroll.

The attack on Saturday prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare war.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said on Monday authorities would impose a total blockade on the Gaza Strip, cutting electricity and blocking food and fuel supplies as part of “a complete siege” on the Hamas-run enclave.
