The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season for the Atlantic Basin officially starts today, June 1 and will end on November 30.

This year, the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has predicted a “near-or above normal” season with 10 to 16 named storms, of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes, including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 miles per hour or higher).

All Government ministries, Non Governmental Organizations, the business fraternity and the general public are therefore urged to prepare as usual for this hurricane season.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services says it will continue to monitor the development of all systems and if necessary, issue public advisories, watches or warnings.

It will also coordinate with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) about the likely hazards accompanying these systems.

All Vincentians must therefore continue to pay close attention to the local radio and television stations as well as other media outlets for releases issued by the Met office.
