Dr. Ralph Gonsalves

This past Sunday, the finals of Vincy Premiere League took place, and many Vincentians attended, but only very few adhered to COVID-19 protocols such as mask wearing and physical distancing. Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Ralph Gonsalves while speaking on radio on Monday expressed his displeasure at this.

“Someone sent me some photographs, some videos, about what happened at yesterday’s finals of the Vincy Premiere League; a good competition and the cricketers made some money and it shows activity and that we’re coming back to normalcy and the like.

But to say I was disappointed is to use a mild word; I was utterly dismayed at what I saw. Just from my casual observation it looked like twenty percent of people had on masks and the rest didn’t and police were around.” Gonsalves said.

The Prime Minister said he questioned why those in attendance were not asked by the authorities to put on their masks and physically distance. He outlined that given the number of available stands, there was ample space to facilitate proper spacing between attendees.

Prime Minister Gonsalves then went on to say that if those in attendance refused to comply with the authorities’ request for them to adhere to the protocols, the stands should have been cleared and the game continue on for television viewers.

“If people didn’t want to put on their masks and do the physical distancing; if they had opposed that; I told the commissioner that the police should cleared the stands completely and let the cricket game be played just for people who are viewing it on TV.” The Prime Minister said.
