A new programme aimed at tackling crime in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was announced as part of a host of “independence goodies” by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.
The programme dubbed ‘Independence from fear’ will feature several initiatives in fighting violent crimes.
A gun amnesty will take place immediately following the passage of legislation next month to increase penalties for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The idea is to get persons to bring in their illegal firearms and after this chance, penalties will be increased and prosecution intensified.
Additional CCTV cameras will be placed across the country and the usage of body cameras for police. The placement of street lights will also be ramped up.
A structured programme will also be carried out to rehabilitate all police stations.
