The explosive eruption of La Soufriere left many in the red zone no choice but to evacuate their homes, and for some their farms, leaving livestock behind.

Minister of Agriculture Hon. Saboto Caesar while speaking on radio this morning said that a lot of farmers that have had to evacuate and leave their animals behind are anxious about the animals’ wellbeing.

Caesar disclosed that on the weekend the Government visited the windward side of the red zone and found that a lot of these animals are still alive, and that the Government, using their vehicles has carried feed and water to these animals, which is necessary because of the lack of availability of grass due to the heavy ash fall in those areas.

Professor Richard Robertson on that same radio program stated that the gap between explosive events had increased, and the agriculture minister hearing this asked whether it would be possible to have a few farmers, in an organized manner enter the red zone to see to these animals, during these periods of quiet.

Robertson said that it is possible for this to be done if all those involved are aware of the risk, and the operation is well organized, he also recommended that in doing so, they work closely with the observatory team, so they can be contacted if something changes.
