History has been made in St. Vincent and the Grenadines with the appointment of a female speaker of the House of Assembly.

Monday saw the swearing in of lawyer Rochelle Forde as speaker during the first session of the 11th parliament and swearing in ceremony of the members of the House of Assembly.

The new Speaker was nominated by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, who said he had sought not only Forde’s permission, but also the entire government side of Parliament.

Following a vote among the members of Parliament, it was determined that Forde, a former senator and Deputy Speaker, received 14 of 22 votes.
