Opposition Senator Shevern John has spoken out against the recent decision by the Vincentian Government to raise particular licenses and fees following an announcement of an increase in wages and an amendment of the income tax threshold.

During his 2024 Budget Speech on January 8th, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning, and Technology Camillo Gonsalves revealed various revenue-generating fiscal measures, including increases in select licenses and fees.

However, Senator John argued that the government’s approach to gain revenue through taxes and non-taxed individuals was ultimately detrimental to the citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The senator considered the impact of the recently announced fiscal measures on people’s purchasing power, particularly those working below the poverty line, such as government Youth Empowerment Service (YES) program workers.

She questioned the budget’s effect on their wages and the purchasing power of Vincentian people.

While the budget was highlighted as an opportunity for growth, Senator John believes that there were missed opportunities in this year’s budget.
