There are suspected cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) within the community in Dominica.

This is according to the country’s Ministry of Health, which disclosed that during the first week of October, one suspected case had been identified.

As a result of this, a circular was released by the Ministry of Health on October 11th, and since that time there have been suspected cases in 5 of Dominica’s 7 health districts among children below the age of six.

HFMD is a common childhood illness caused by various strains of enteroviruses, primarily the Coxsackievirus A16 and Enterovirus 71.

It usually affects children under the age of five but can also occur in older children and adults. The disease presents as a mild to moderate illness but can cause discomfort and concern.
