After a week of protests over high living costs, the streets of the capital were reported calm on Sunday, with negotiations to reduce prices underway. Most roads were cleared following days of demonstrations, which included clashes with police and a curfew from 9 PM to 5 AM.

While the curfew and a ban on gatherings and fuel sales will remain in effect until Monday, officials indicated they could be extended.

The final round of negotiations involving the prefect, local officials, and the RPPRAC association is set for Tuesday, focusing on which products will see price reductions. France’s Minister for Overseas Territories, François-Noël Buffet, noted that discussions were progressing constructively, aiming for price drops of 15-20%.

He emphasized the need to restore public order to facilitate a resolution, highlighting that recent violence detracted from the legitimate demands regarding living costs. The State is committed to ensuring transparency in price control measures.
