The Bahamian Government is moving to address a spike in murders taking place in the country.

“While much of it is clearly gang-related it is also clear that a range of other factors are contributing to this spike,” Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis said in a statement on Sunday shortly after he convened a conclave of high-level stakeholders.

“There are no easy quick fixes to the crime dilemma neither is there any one solution. However, we were able to identify immediate measures that will help to reduce levels of crime. I will have more to say on this issue in the coming days but I want to express a heartfelt thank you to the various agencies who participated.”

Since January 1, there have been 33 murders on the island.

The last incident took place Sunday night at Palm Tree Avenue on New Providence Island around 9 o’clock, shortly after the Bahamian prime minister and his delegates met.
