A 36-year-old man from Antigua has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for raping his former partner.
He was convicted in April for an incident that occurred on July 22, 2019.
According to Loop News, the victim and the perpetrator had ended their six-month relationship about a month before the assault took place.
Motivated by suspicions of infidelity, the man deceived the woman into entering his car under the false pretense of repaying a debt.
Instead, he drove her to an isolated location where he verbally abused, physically assaulted, and sexually violated her without protection, falsely claiming to be HIV-positive.
Justice Ann Marie Smith imposed the lengthy sentence in response to the gravity of the crimes committed.
