The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, through its Zika Action Committee has intensified its targeted approach to effectively tackle the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the vector that transmits the Zika Virus.
As part of this approach, three sets of workers were deployed to the Grenadines last weekend, following the case confirmation to clean, fog and provide the relevant support as needed.
Clean up activity was held in Bequia on February 27th and 28th, led by Action Bequia in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, and saw participation from islanders, the Central Water and Sewerage Authority, BRAGSA and the Vector Control Unit.
A similar cleanup was conducted in the North Leeward Health district.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Simone Keizer Beache is encouraging the public to work even more closely with the Ministry in the various cleanup activities and fight the mosquito, which is the source of the problem.
The first and only known laboratory confirmed case of Zika virus here was recorded on February 23rd, 2016, and pertains to a 34 year old female resident of Union Island, who has recovered.
