The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into an incident which occurred at the Mandeville Police lock-up in the central parish of Manchester, on Friday morning, involving the police and detainees.
According to police reports, during a check of the cells by the police, a cellphone was seized, and a brawl then ensued during which an inmate sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
“Preliminary information indicates that following the confiscation of a cellphone and reportedly other contraband, an altercation took place between both parties. An inmate received injuries and was taken to the Mandeville General Hospital for treatment and reportedly transferred to another police facility since,” said the head of INDECOM, Hugh Faulkner who deployed investigators to the lock-up Friday to gather details on the incident.
He said INDECOM has been examining the requisite records at the lock-up and will be interviewing all parties connected to the incident.
