Jamaica has issued an explanation for why it did not vote at the United Nation’s emergency session on Gaza.
Jamaica did not vote as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last Friday approved a nonbinding resolution calling for a “humanitarian truce” in Gaza leading to a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers.
The Jamaican government said that the situation in the middle east demands a unified global voice against human rights violations.
Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in a statement late Sunday night reassured Jamaican that the Government not voting during the session is not a suggestion of change in their stance on international human rights.
Twelve Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries voted in favour of the resolution. The 193-member world body adopted the resolution by a vote of 120-14 with 45 abstentions after rejecting a Canadian amendment backed by the United States.
