SixÂty-nine peoÂple rangÂing from the ages of 19 to 70 years have been found locked away in cages at a church loÂcatÂed along the EastÂern Main Road in ArouÂca on WednesÂday mornÂing.
These peoÂple both men and women are beÂlieved to be vicÂtims of “modÂern day slavÂery” and “huÂman trafÂfickÂing” acÂcordÂing to ComÂmisÂsionÂer of PoÂlice Gary GrifÂfith who spoke to the Guardian MeÂdia LimÂitÂed’s Lead InÂvesÂtigaÂtive desk Mark BasÂsant earÂliÂer on WednesÂday just outÂside the TransÂformed Life MinÂistry ReÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion CenÂtre.
“What we beÂlieve is that we have cracked what we beÂlieve is the biggest huÂman trafÂfickÂing ring in the counÂtry…some of them said they have been here for years…this is a much bigÂger picÂture and we have to inÂvesÂtiÂgate each and every case…this reÂlates to virÂtuÂal slavÂery with what we have seen here. Some of them say they have been torÂtured. It is such a bigÂger picÂture with profÂit beÂing made out of this…famÂiÂly memÂbers deÂlibÂerÂateÂly sendÂing their loved ones here and exÂtractÂing the profÂits from the famÂiÂlies, ” GrifÂfith said.
He deÂscribed the scenes as “barÂbarÂic, ” “PerÂsons are seen in cages, handÂcuffed…perÂsons were beÂing torÂtured. We saw tasers and baÂtons…and again this is a sitÂuÂaÂtion of virÂtuÂal modÂern day slavÂery.”
DurÂing a a sting opÂerÂaÂtion coÂorÂdiÂnatÂed by GrifÂfith and exÂeÂcutÂed by the SpeÂcial OpÂerÂaÂtion ReÂsponse Team (SORT), the T&T PoÂlice SerÂvice (TTPS) resÂcued the 69 T&T citÂiÂzens (65 men and 4 women). They were all held capÂtive, where most of them were in cages and some handÂcuffs.
The opÂerÂaÂtion comÂmenced at about 12:15 am on WednesÂday, at the promiÂnent church.
AcÂcordÂing to the TTPS search warÂrants were isÂsued purÂsuant to SecÂtion 13 Chap. 12:10 of the TrafÂfickÂing in PerÂsons Act, afÂter a peÂriÂod of monÂiÂtorÂing and inÂvesÂtiÂgaÂtions.
GrifÂfith, Deputy ComÂmisÂsionÂer of PoÂlice OpÂerÂaÂtions (Ag.) Jayson Forde, the TTPS’s VicÂtim and WitÂness SupÂport Unit, NorthÂern DiÂviÂsion C.I.D. are alÂso on the scene, asÂsistÂed by a medÂical unit comÂprisÂing of docÂtors, nursÂes and amÂbuÂlance atÂtenÂdants from the North CenÂtral ReÂgionÂal Health AuÂthorÂiÂty, who are alÂso conÂductÂing iniÂtial on-scene exÂamÂiÂnaÂtions of the resÂcued naÂtionÂals.
Six peoÂple were arÂrestÂed at the church, inÂcludÂing the PasÂtor.
In an imÂmeÂdiÂate deÂfense of the church and it’s pasÂtor, a comÂmitÂted memÂber claimed “lies.”
SpeakÂing on strict anonymiÂty, she said it is a reÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion home for peoÂple who want to come out of drug adÂdicÂtion.
“It is not huÂman trafÂfickÂing. It is a reÂhab so the pasÂtor have the place gatÂed to preÂvent them from runÂning away. These peoÂple’s parÂents sign conÂtracts and agree. They alÂso view the places…So why would famÂiÂlies put their love one there if they saw it? NoÂbody there is in chains etc they are lyÂing. God hear me it is a lie, ” the church memÂber said.
Guardian meÂdia was told that famÂiÂly memÂbers pay from $5,000 and more for their loved ones to be in the cenÂtre.
GrifÂfith said he was told by seÂnior poÂlice ofÂfiÂcers that reÂports were made about the orÂganÂiÂsaÂtion a few months ago and added that it is alÂleged that they were aware of false imÂprisÂonÂment. He added that he is apÂpalled that they did not do a thorÂough search where they would have seen perÂsons beÂing held in cages, some of them for years, “and then beÂing aware that they were in cages and nothÂing was beÂing done so this matÂter has gone a bit furÂther where it is acÂtuÂalÂly exÂpandÂing inÂto a posÂsiÂble inÂvesÂtiÂgaÂtion takÂing place with poÂlice ofÂfiÂcers.”
MinÂisÂter of NaÂtionÂal SeÂcuÂriÂty, StuÂart Young said he was conÂtactÂed at about 2:30 am by GrifÂfith and briefed on the onÂgoÂing poÂlice opÂerÂaÂtion takÂing place, “where the TTPS had unÂcovÂered apÂproxÂiÂmateÂly 70 perÂsons beÂing held in very disÂturbÂing cirÂcumÂstances at what was beÂing deÂscribed as a reÂhaÂbilÂiÂtaÂtion cenÂtre.”
Young said he was alÂso in comÂmuÂniÂcaÂtion with the MinÂisÂter of Health TerÂrence DeyalsÂingh and the DiÂrecÂtor of the Counter TrafÂfickÂing Unit of the MinÂistry of NaÂtionÂal SeÂcuÂriÂty, to enÂsure that necÂesÂsary supÂport was proÂvidÂed for an unÂfoldÂing sitÂuÂaÂtion.
Young said he is shocked and disÂturbed on hearÂing the news, “From the preÂlimÂiÂnary inÂforÂmaÂtion proÂvidÂed to me, I am shocked and disÂturbed at the cirÂcumÂstances unÂder which huÂmans were beÂing held and I strongÂly conÂdemn same.”
“I reÂmind perÂsons that this is now an acÂtive and unÂfoldÂing poÂlice inÂvesÂtiÂgaÂtion and I am cerÂtain that facts surÂroundÂing this disÂturbÂing matÂter will beÂgin to be unÂcovÂered. AcÂcordÂingÂly, it is pruÂdent for litÂtle more to be said at this time and the TTPS should be perÂmitÂted to do their work, ” he added.
Young has thanked all those inÂvolved in the opÂerÂaÂtion of findÂing and freeÂing the vicÂtims who he said may have been held against their will and subÂject to inÂhuÂmane and deÂgradÂing treatÂment.
InÂvesÂtiÂgaÂtions are conÂtinÂuÂing.
