The Traffic Department of the Royal St. Vincent and The Grenadines Police Force has expressed concern at the recent increase in vehicular accidents on the nation’s roads.

During WE FM’s Traffic Talk segment, Police Constable 1040 Hunte raised the issue.

“We at the traffic department have noticed an increase of motor vehicle collisions across St Vincent and the Grenadines, resulting in vehicles being moderately to extensively damage and in some instances, persons sustained injuries about their bodies and by extension causing fatalities. As a result, we at the traffic department strictly advise motorists to exercise precautionary measures while driving on the roads.”

Officer Hunte suggested measures such as avoiding overtaking around corners, staying a safe distance behind other drivers, and abiding by traffic signs.

He went on to also advise road users in SVG to ensure that the appropriate level of maintenance is done on their vehicles to avoid the occurrence of accidents.

“We are further advising motor vehicle owners and operators to also take and practice precautionary measures such as checking your vehicles regularly by ensuring that the vehicle is properly serviced and is serviced on time, make sure the braking system for the vehicle is in a good working condition and also ensuring that they have good proper tires on your vehicles.”

This appeal from the traffic department comes as 49-year-old Keith Joseph of Edinboro, driver of a minibus that ran off the Gibson Corner road on August 20, is battling serious face and leg injuries in the ICU at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.

Several passengers and a pedestrian also sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
