An animator, Buck Woodall, has filed a lawsuit against Disney in a California federal court, alleging that the studio copied elements of his screenplay, Bucky, to create the hit animated franchise Moana.
Both are set in an ancient Polynesian village and follow teenagers who set out on a dangerous voyage to save their land, and meet ancient spirits who manifest as animals on their journey.
Woodall claims that Disney used his ideas without consent for the 2016 film, which grossed over $680 million worldwide and became a streaming success.
The sequel, Moana 2, has also achieved massive success, grossing $989.8 million globally and is anticipated to be an Academy Award contender.
