The CCTV system being operated by the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force is not, but a gamechanger for law enforcement in SVG.
This is according to Inspector of Police, attached to the Telecoms Department Olsen Rodney, during a recent appearance on WE FM’s Cop Chat program.
He said that the CCTV system has led to numerous convictions here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
‘ I’ve heard it before that some people believe that the CCTV system is just a joke, but that is not true. It works a lot for Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force. There is a lot of convictions we have in court, and it’s been used often in court where we’re using CCTV, remember I said before, it’s really a game changer. So some people it’s not working, that is not the case.’ he said.
Inspector Rodney went on to provide an example of a situation where the system aided the police force in nabbing a suspect that was targeting females in Kingstown.
‘We had an issue where there was this person targeting ladies around Kingstown, he would go and take away a person’s background, their cell phone and whatever. It was difficult to catch that person, but then persons from the department saw this gentleman, just similarly with the other crimes that were committed and so on, and we were able to inform CID. CID went and they got him and so on and whatnot and through that other footage, he was responsible and convicted for several other crimes. So the system is working’ he stated.
The second (2nd) phase of the Intelligent Video Analytics (CCTV) Project, supported by the Government and People of the Republic of China on Taiwan, was inaugurated on March 10th 2023.
Then Commissioner of Police Colin John, hailed the system as another tool in the crime-fighting kit of the police as it supplements other crime-fighting methods of the RSVGPF.
