In a long-running class action lawsuit in the US over allegations of intentionally slowing down certain models of IPhones, Apple has agreed to pay $500m to settle.
Each complainant will receive a fraction of the settlement, roughly $92 per claim. In 2020, Apple chose to settle the case and expressed no wrongdoing, but cited the cost of ongoing litigation as a concern.
Another lawsuit in the UK is currently asking for £1.6bn in compensation. The US lawsuit started back in December 2017 when Apple confirmed that it had in fact slowed down certain iPhones as they aged.
Apple claimed that the phones’ lifespan was extended when battery performance decreased.
However, the company was accused of not informing its customers of the performance slowdown, which led to the lawsuit.
At the time, it was estimated that each person might receive as little as $25 each, but the actual payout is nearly four times that amount.
