Gun culture is being glorified too much in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Acting Commissioner of Police Enville Williams made the statement in a press briefing on Monday held by the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF).
He called on the media and public service vehicles to do their part in helping to mitigate the glorification of guns and murder.
“Gun culture is too glorified in our society, murder and the like is too widely played in our vans and on the media through the songs that we listen to and pay and the young men and the young women, first thing they do when they get on a bus on mornings, they listen to these songs, and the last thing at nights—it’s still these songs,”
The Commissioner however noted that he was in no way blaming the media for this, but called on them work with the police to fix the problem.
“…and I’m not blaming the media, I’m simply saying let us work together to use your reach to change things for all of us, because at the end of the day St. Vincent is our home and together, we can work hand in hand to change hearts and minds away from crime and violence, because you have that reach that can meet people where they are,” he said.
The RSVGPF’s press briefing on Monday came on the heels of SVG recording its 47th homicide of 2023, five higher than the nation’s record count of 42 which was set last year.
