The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Energy is urging the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their families from viral respiratory infections, including influenza and the common cold.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, seventy-seven cases of Influenza A (H3N2) have been reported in St. Vincent and the Grenadines between January and 12th December 2025. Most cases occurred among persons aged 0–19, contributing to a total of 202 influenza cases recorded across all subtypes this year.

With the upcoming VAT-Free Shopping Day and the peak of the Christmas season, characterized by increased social gatherings, shopping, and traditional events such as Nine Mornings, the Ministry warns that close contact increases the risk of infection if basic preventive measures are not observed.

The Ministry advises the public to:

  • Wear a face mask in crowded or enclosed spaces, especially if experiencing flu-like symptoms.
  • Practice proper hand hygiene, washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes at all times.
  • Stay home if feeling unwell and avoid gatherings if experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, or other flu-like symptoms.
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or persist.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home and in the workplace.

The Ministry emphasizes that controlling the spread of viral infections during the festive season requires a collective effort. By following these precautions, Vincentians can help protect vulnerable populations and enjoy a healthier holiday season.
