Manager of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services, Mr. Billy Jeffers, while speaking on radio this week, urged those residing in the valleys of the La Soufriere volcano to be mindful of lahars, even as the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane season comes to a close, saying that lahars can happen in any season.

“Flooding mainly occurs in the valleys of the volcano, and lahars; which we know lahars are settled ash and volcanic debris being mobilized by rainfall, and based on the predictions from the Seismic Research Centre, lahars are likely to continue for the next few years, and it is likely whenever it is rains—and this can happen in the dry season as well—lahars will occur and the residents living in the valleys of the volcano should be extremely mindful of this.” He said.

The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1st, 2021, and ended on November 30th, 2021.
