The restoration of seismic stations that were damaged due to the explosive eruption of the La Soufriere volcano will continue over the next few weeks. There are also plans to build new stations to further strengthen monitoring capacity. This was disclosed via a letter from the Director of the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies, which was ready by this country’s Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Ralph Gonsalves, during parliament.

“High resolution photographs and videos of the summit crater taken by helicopter reconnaissance during the week of June 21st has confirmed that there is no new lava dome inside the crater.

Over the next few weeks, ongoing work to restore monitoring capacity lost during the explosive phase of the eruption will continue with the preparation for the installation of additional seismic stations at Greiggs mountain and Fitz Hughes.

A new seismic station will also be installed at Upper Waterloo, and options for restoration of the Owia station are being explored.” He said.
