A Zero Hunger Trust Fund is to be established as the government pushes forward in its thrust towards achieving zero hunger here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines by the year 2020.

In presenting his Budget Address yesterday, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said some 3,000 persons have been identified as being in extreme poverty and susceptible to hunger, and pointed out that the proposed Trust Fund is a central component of the draft National Zero Hunger Action Plan.

Dr. Gonsalves said the Trustees of the Fund will comprise of public servants, professionals and civil society organizations, among others.

He also announced the imposition of a levy of 2% on mobile telephone calls and on international calls to be paid directly into the Zero hunger Trust Fund. This levy is estimated to raise $2.7 million annually.
