We are not out of the period of explosive eruptions yet and we can still have explosions going forward, this is according Professor Richard Robertson, Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre.

Robertson said that although it had seemed that we were out of the period of having explosions at La Soufriere, this morning at approximately 6:16 an explosion took place, after 41 hours of long period earthquakes, up from the 12 to 15 hour periods we had previously.

This morning’s explosion, while not a big eruption column, it was big in comparison to the one that occurred on Tuesday April 13th, big enough to punch a hole through the clouds at about 7,000 or 8,000 meters, according to Professor Robertson. He said although some of the ash drifted to the east of the island, most of it went to the west.

Professor Robertson said that these explosive events will continue to take place but they should only disrupt the northern parts of the island where the volcano is located and where persons should have evacuated from already.
