Britain’s ambassador to Cuba, Antony Stokes, signed up most of the UK’s Caribbean Overseas Territories to a new Caribbean Customs Organization (COO) recently at the 41st Annual Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council (CCLEC) in Havana.

Online News Source, Caribbean News Now – said the treaty provides a legal framework to formalize and enhance an existing Memorandum Of Understanding first signed in 1989. It allows for the 36 signatories to cooperate and exchange information to fight customs offences in the region.

As one of the territories now signed up, the Cayman Islands will continue to strengthen positive regional and international relationships for enhanced border protection, officials said in a press release. The COO will replace the CCLEC over a transition period of two years.
