An Indian court today sentenced a driver of the US-based ride-hailing company Uber to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a female passenger last year in Delhi.

Shiv Kumar Yadav was also convicted of criminal intimidation and kidnapping.

The 26-year-old woman was taken to a secluded area and raped after booking a journey home with Uber in December.

According to Reuters News Agency, Yadav got his job with Uber with fake references, enabling him to hide his criminal record. The firm was banned in Delhi as a result, but recently regained the right to operate after tightening driver checks.
