The ongoing improvement efforts taking place at the Questelles beach have been bolstered by a donation made by the Trinity Apostolic Church on Wednesday June 15th.

The donation of $10,000 was handed over during a brief ceremony, to Mr. Julius Williams and Mr. Rupert Mulzac.

Pastor Vincent Sobers spoke with WEFM News at the ceremony, about the church’s motivation behind the donation.

“What really motivated us is that we are in a community, the church is in the community and we are here for the community, and as I said before, we have always been contributing to the community in one way or the other, and we see this project as a very important one because the entire community is going to benefit from it, maybe the country at large will benefit from it as well” he said.

Pastor Sobers also pointed out the potential positive impact the improvements being made to Questelles beach could have on SVG’s tourism industry.

We also spoke with Mr. Williams about the work that has been carried out on the Questelles beach so far, specifically about the cleaning up of the well which, Mr. Williams said was started as a “fun project” which then turned out to be a lifesaver.

“We cleaned the well as a fun project, Mr. Mulzac instigated that. We all got together to clean this well. It is well cleaned, we put a little hut on it and that sort of stuff, only to realize that five years down the road this well is going to come and practically save our lives” he said.

What Mr. Williams references here is the 2021 eruption of La Soufriere volcano that disrupted water supply across the island.

“In the eruption, we had that water tested. The CWSA said the water was good for drinking, so we installed a well pump and we ran lines back up to where vehicles can come and collect water” Williams said.

Mr. Williams made mention of a donation of a 1000 gallon water tank from Lynch Caribbean Brokers SVG Ltd which carried the water storage capacity at the site to 2000 gallons, when added to the 1000 gallon tank that the group had already installed.

Along with the work that has been done on the well, Mr. Williams also made mention of an ongoing washroom facility project.

“This beach is lacking a washroom. So we went in partnership with the Government to provide a washroom. They basically gave us some funding. The community chipped in; a lot of self help. BRAGSA brought in material, Williams Electronics provided heavy equipment to install the boulders and that sort of stuff in the necessary areas” he said.

Mr. Willaims says that there is now a functional washroom, but the project is still currently ongoing, as further improvements such as a parking area and sea defense are still needed. He said that any contribution that can be made to this effort will be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Rupert Mulzac discussed his visions for the future of the Questelles, saying that he sees the possibility for increased commerce and even employment through the beach’s improvement.

“When this facility comes online, I think the beach and the people in the village will be more prosperous and because of the traffic there is going to be commerce, you know, people are going to buy more stuff; charcoal, ice, Hairoun, whatever” Mulzac said.

There are also opportunities for employment to be created through the improvement of the beach according to Mr. Mulzac.

“We are going to operate the bathroom for profit, so that would mean that we could get two people to operate, and once the bathroom is open the Government themselves will designate Questelles beach as a tourist destination, consequently they will need somebody to clean the beach, one of our guys will get a job”

Mr. Mulzac sees to the day to day operations pertaining to the cleanup efforts of the beach, which is supported by in various ways by WEFM, Williams Electronics and Caribbean Investment Ltd.
