Trinidad and Tobago’s Superintendent of Prisons Wayne Jackson was shot and killed at his home in Malabar last night.

Jackson was shot dead at the front gate to his home in Malabar, Arima at around 7.30pm. He had just arrived home after a shift at the Maximum Security Prison, in Arouca.

A lone gunman fired at least 30 shots.

Police believe Jackson’s killing was ordered from behind prison walls, and the call as made using a cell phone that prisoners are not entitled to have.

According to the Trinidad Express, Prison sources say there were two recent incidents in the prison system that may be linked to Jackson’s death.

There was a recent incident at the prison in Port of Spain where a prisoner, the brother of a reputed gang leader, was beaten, and days before that, there was a lock-down and search of the Maximum Security Prison after a round of ammunition was discovered near the gym. It led to a search of prisoners and the discovery of contraband.
