The Marriage Act has been amended to allow a wider range of individuals to conduct marriages as well widen the ambit as it pertains to the location where persons can be married. Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves spoke on the amendment while speaking on radio this week.

Dr. Gonsalves said that the amendment does not change much for locals getting married but will make it easier for tourists flying into SVG with the intention of getting married.

“It doesn’t change much for Vincentians who are marrying in the normal ways, but you know a lot of people who come down here as tourists, they want to get married but they’re coming for a short period and they’re looking for somebody and it’s difficult for them.

So we enlarged the number of persons who can actually conduct marriages now, including the Justice of Peace and other categories of officials and we have also widened the ambit as to the location as to where people can get married, so for instance at the hotels.
