Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be assisting the people in the northern Leeward Islands who were severely affected due to the passage of Hurricane Irma.

Speaking on Friday on the Shakeup Program aired here on WEFM, Prime Minister Gonsalves said this country is solidarity with all the countries impacted by Irma, as well as with the city of Huston in the US state of Texas, which suffered significant damage as a result of Hurricane Harvey, in August.

He said the government will be sending 50,000 US dollars to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and 50,000US dollars to Antigua and Barbuda to aid in the relief efforts in those islands.

Dr. Gonsalves said he had spoken with Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne, and stated that arrangements are being made to have technical personnel from here be sent to assist with the reconstruction works to be undertaken in Barbuda.

He said arrangements are also being made to have a boat sent to Antigua.

According to Prime Minister Gonsalves, significant monies will be needed to assist with the reconstruction of Barbuda.
