This country is today observing World Diabetes Day 2017 under the theme “Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future”.

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is hosting a one week training workshop on Chronic Diseases Self-Management.

The November 13-17, 2017 workshop is taking place at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown, from 8 am – 4 pm daily.

A total of 24 health care professionals including Staff Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Community Health Aids are attending this training that is geared towards empowering persons who can assist someone with chronic diseases, like hypertension and diabetes, to manage and live a better life, by providing the necessary skills in mastering the symptoms of these lifestyle diseases.

The training focuses primarily on three major underlying skills related to chronic diseases self-management. These include action planning, decision making, and problem solving skills.

The facilitators are Community Nutrition Officer-Ms. Rosemary Mockett, and Health Promotion Officer-Ms. Shanika John.
